Dear Lord, the glitches @.@

It's no secret that Bethesda is not exactly known for their good coding. But it seems that Skyrim, their latest gaming masterpiece, has gotten some of the most frustrating glitches known to man. It's a shame that such a good game could make you want to tear your hair out at times >.<

Now, most glitches are fixable. Others, however, cannot be fixed unless you load a saved game that could date as far back as the beginning of your journey (hence the hair tearing out).

I'm making this topic so we can discuss both.

You can also post here about things that aren't necessarily glitches, but maybe things that will become impossible to do if you haven't completed a certain prerequisite at a certain time.

I'll also post solutions underneath each glitch that will be ordered from easiest and least game-breaking to...not.

I'll start off with a few:

Note: This is a Hearthfire-only glitch! Those who do not have the Hearthfire plugin for the game will not experience this.
As many of you may know, there is a new expansion for Skyrim: Hearthfire. This allows you to build your own houses from scratch, hire your own personal bards, and even adopt children.

There's also a chance that your house will be attacked.

Yes, anything from skeevers to dragons can attack your home in Hearthfire. Not only that, but bandits can kidnap your spouse!

Yup, that's right. But trust me, hastening to your spouse's rescue is not the most annoying part of this. Once you've killed all the bastards that caged up your beloved and set him/her free, you'll notice something odd.

Your spouse will always be facing the same direction, and will not be able to turn for anything. Not even a FUS RO DAH will knock them off their feet anymore. Weirder still, your spouse will experience strange walking glitches that seemingly cannot be fixed.

While this may not be annoying to some players, others who marry spouses that can also be followers will find this particularly irritating. A follower spouse will no longer be able to attack anyone, even if commanded to do so. They will draw their weapon, but not actually initiate combat. Also, when walking, they will rely more on the game's built-in "obstacle avoider" (where the person will stop, and then suddenly appear somewhere else) rather than their own two feet. This means it will take an EXTREMELY long time for them to go anywhere, unless it is in the exact direction they are facing.
Solution:
1. You must save multiple times throughout the quest, starting before you read the note that gives you the quest in your quest log. Doing the quest multiple times seems to fix it occasionally.
2. Reload a game save from before the event occurred. This quest seems to only trigger at certain times, so there's a chance it won't happen if you load a save far back enough. Sometimes, this isn't possible, however.
3. Kill your spouse. Yes I know this isn't pretty, but it does work. PC gamers can use the console to resurrect their spouse after killing them. This fixes the glitch. However, you will no longer be married after doing this and you will not have the option to remarry the person.
When you enter Windhelm and talk to some of the people there, you may notice that some people talk about the "Butcher", a murderer. After you've traveled there a couple times, you'll come across another gory murder scene. Talking to the guard gives you the quest Blood on the Ice.

Completing this quest is a prerequisite for buying Hjerm, a house in Windhelm. This is considered to be one of the best houses in the game and one of the favorites.

However, there are a couple of events that can stop this quest from ever triggering. In the Dark Brotherhood questline, you are asked to kill Nilsine Shattershield in Windhelm as an optional part of the quest. This makes her mother, Tova, commit suicide over the loss of both her daughters. Because you either need to pickpocket Tova or pick the lock of Hjerm the quest will not trigger and you cannot start it or purchase the house.

Also, because Arivanya is the final target of the murderer, she must also be alive for this quest to be able to start. (The murderer may alternatively try to kill your spouse if she is a woman living in Windhelm!)
Solution:
1. Do not kill Nilsine in the quest Mourning Never Comes. This allows you to start the Blood on the Ice quest, but forfeits the bonus and eliminates Muiri as a potential candidate for marriage.
2. Sadly, the only other solution here is to do this quest before the Dark Brotherhood quest, or to load a game from before you did the quest. Otherwise, you cannot initiate Blood on the Ice and Hjerm is impossible to acquire.

I know right? I lost a follower named Stenvar because of some Companions quest and now hes gone entirely, he had alot of valuable stuff on him too.

I also seem to have misplaced my horse, Shadowmere.... how the hell does one misplace a demon horse?!

Awesome i didint knew hearthfire already came out for the PC keep on going Fal

@Sen - if you're playing the PC version of the game you can move them directly to you. There's two commands you'll need for this.

For Stenvar:
Code: Select all
prid B998C
moveto player
For Shadowmere:
Code: Select all
prid 9CCD8
moveto player
If either is dead, you can then type resurrect into the console to revive them.

The prid command is a very useful command. It selects the NPC's reference ID (not base ID) without having to click on them.

Found another solution (sort of) for the Hearthfire glitch mentioned above. Before starting the quest you can type in the same commands I mentioned earlier for Shadowmere and Stenvar (of course, replacing the ref ID with that of your spouse's) and this also seems to fix it.

Unrelated to skyrim, but another game I have noticed that is extremely glitchy is kotor 2. All these weird fixes have been posted in forums online for a problem I've been having, ranging from editing the config file to holding a plasma torch as you walk through a door. None of them have worked for me yet lol

Hm, well not sure about Shadwmere, but you can try and see if Stenvar went back to his scripted location, which is Candlehearth Hall in Windhelm.

Yeah, I already checked there like 40 times lolz, idk where he could have gone, he had my Sword of Falkreath too... As for Shadowmere, i lost track of him after that quest to steal a horse named Frost, seems to be the running theme that Shadowmere disapears

It is Skyrim DLC that gives the player the ability to buy and build onto their own plot of land, instead of buying a generic, pre-made house.

I assume it's free and not officially supported by bethesda?

Sorry Sen, but I don't know if there's any real solution for that. Having a console makes solving glitches so much more easier >.<

You have to pay for it, otherwise it wouldn't be available to Xbox players through normal means.

DLC, or Downloadable Content, is official game additions released by the game developer for purchase by customers who want it for their game. Typically DLC can include maps, quests or storylines that were developed after the games release.
Upon doing the Thieves Guild quest line you will come across multiple unique items which will prompt a miscellaneous quest objective: "Return the (item name here) to Delvin". Delvin will buy the item for a fixed amount of gold, depending on your income.

Upon your journey, you'll find two Eyes of the Falmer. The left eye can be sold to Delvin. Unfortunately however, the quest will not initiate the majority of the time.

The reason for this bug is because the Eye's code is written incorrectly (big shock, right?). It is written to complete the quest, not start it.
Solution:
1. For PC users - To start with, DO NOT LOOT THE EYE. Enter the following commands into the console:
Code: Select all
SetStage TGlarceny 80
player.additem 1994f 1
This puts the quest in your quest log and gives you the Eye, allowing you to sell it to Delvin. It will not, however, remove the Eye from your inventory when you sell it.
2. Not a fix per se, but the Eye can also be sold to a normal merchant for a premium like most items can. You most likely will not get as much gold from it, and the Eye will not display in the Guild.
Occasionally, when drinking an invisibility potion, using the spell invisibility or using the sneak perk "Shadow Warrior" you will notice something strange when your character becomes visible again.

Your character's eyes will become distorted, as if the textures got rearranged somehow and your eyes no longer look like eyes. They almost look like a stained glass window at times.
Solution:
1. Quite possibly one of the weirdest solutions I've seen for a glitch. Open the console and type in "sexchange" twice (without the quotes). If it isn't obvious, this turns your character into the opposite gender and then back to the proper one.
Typing in "showracemenu" without the quotes also works.
2. Transform into a werewolf, or if you have the Dawnguard plugin, transforming into a vampire lord also works.
3. If you have the Dawnguard plugin, you can see the face sculptor in the Ragged Flagon in Riften and get her to bring up the character creation menu again for you. This costs 1000 gold, however.
If you've at least started the Thieves Guild questline, you'll know that there are several extra jobs available for those wanting some extra cash (or to further other ends). These quests can be given an unlimited amount of times.

Some things, however, prevent you from being able to complete them. The person you're targeting can die or the person's house can be destroyed.

The number of possibilities can vary on a number of different factors like the system you are using and what kind of job you've taken.
Solution:
1. Again, depending on the job you've taken and what the particular bug is, you can fix it through the use of console commands.
2. All extra jobs can be forfeited by simply talking to either Vex or Delvin, whoever gave you the quest and telling them you would like to quit the job. There is no disadvantage to doing this, except for the disapproving dialogue that will inevitably ensue.
