So, for like the 5th time, I've been reading this book called Ender's Game. Some of you might have read it before (Jawfin probably, idk), but if not, you should. It's really a great book.

It's a sci-fi novel, but the focus isn't so much on the sci-fi aspect of it as it is on the life and psychology of the main character. I'll give a short premise and try not to spoil too much.

It's set in the future, where humanity has already been attacked twice by an alien race known as "the buggers". In response, the nations of Earth have set aside their differences and formed the IF or international fleet to cope with the alien threat. Obviously, the fleet needs soldiers, and goes around picking out exceptionally smart kids and sending them to "battle school" where they learn to be soldiers from a young age to eventually fight in wars with the aliens. The book centers around Ender (who's real name is Andrew) who is one of the kids selected for battle school. It follows Ender as he learns how to fight and more about the enemy and his expected role in the eventual battles to come.

It's really a fantastic book, and it's the first of a series of 4. I didn't really like books 3 or 4, this one is amazing, and the second is pretty good. There's also a book that takes place at the same time following another kid called Ender's Shadow which is, again, amazing. It's by Orson Scott Card, and is worth a read if you have the time.

I read that book in high school. I liked it so much I also read the second one. Don't really remember a lot about it, but I do recommend it

Read it countless times, along with Xenocide, Speaker for the Dead, Ender's Shadow. I didn't realise how many books there are in the series though.

yeah, there's like the 4 main ones and then all the other ones. I haven't read them all, only the 4 and Ender's Shadow

As for the movie, I heard about that a while back and was really excited, but then someone mentioned that the kid from Hugo would play Ender, which I thought was bogus

Read the series, and all of the Bean spin-off series (in some respects, I liked those more than the other books that follow Ender himself -- since you get to see what became of Peter).

Fabulous sci-fi novels. I could probably go on for hours about how much I like them. It's good to see others appreciate it also.

I never had to read it, or at the very least, don't remember it at all. Maybe it was just your teacher that made it mandatory cuz I don't remember this book at all.

And yet Card said that he only wrote Ender's Game as a forerunner to develop its 2 sequels. I agree though, without the battle room and stuff it got boring.

Depends what you're into. I think a lot of aspects of the latter books are incredible.

The concept of Jane is pretty fundamental to a lot of future stories that came out. But admittedly, by the end of it, Ender became very strange as a character, which I suppose is well within reason considering his childhood.

I'd go through the Bean series. I'm curious to see what you all think of Peter.

When I was in HS they made us read Lord of the Flies....I hated that book

bah. I've recently learned that Orson Scott Card is openly homophobic and a lot of his earnings have gone towards anti-gay campaigns and what not. he won't be getting any more of my money regardless of how much I like that series.

That's the relevancy of that to me XD in other words I don't let those things influence what I will and wont enjoy :)

Sure, but why should any of us care? The man can rant and rave about whatever he wants, but it doesn't affect the sheer quality of his writing.

Also, Jawfin, I am really pumped for the movie now lol

ive read it and havent read enders shadow because my brother let a person borrow it and still havent gotten it back...lol that was like two years ago.
another good series that im not old enough to read is the Honor Harrington series.But i will say that ive heard that they are build up books,so are boring all the way through until the end...and ive heard that the writer explains the ship in really great detail so before you go and get the Honor Harrington series id make sure that you like sci-fi...in great detail lol horrible at writing soz for that.

I recently discovered a new piece to the Ender's game puzzle

Orson Scott Card, in conjunction with another author, has been writing new books that take place 100 years before Ender's Game and detail the first formic wars. There's two that I know of so far, Earth Unaware and Earth Afire. They're both amazing. The second one was only published this year, so I look forward to the next ones in the new series.
