After many years of begging and pleading....Raven Software has released the source code for JK2 and JKA. This, in it's right mind....is huge.

Essentially, this will open up a huge amount of potential for numerous modifications and engine changes that were previously impossible to achieve. As such...it is encouraged that we all take advantage of this magnificent release, modders and non-modders alike.

Both the Hub and JACoders have already dug their hands into the code and are now working on releasing a new patch for JKA and JK2....this new "1.02" patch will fix a load of previously existing issues. The basic outline of what's to come can be found here

Seem to be quoting Wikipedia a lot today.

Most computer applications are distributed in a form that includes executable files, but not their source code. If the source code were included, it would be useful to a user, programmer, or system administrator, who may wish to modify the program or understand how it works.

So, in layman's terms, it expands the possibilities for mods, upgrades, etc by a lot.
