Ok so i'm trying my luck a bit at staffing but the fan has eluded my somehow, i'm not sure if i should swing from side to side madly or focus more on a frontal cone attack method? But the second seems to slow me down however is it worth the quicker strikes sacrificing speed? p.s Feel free to correct me as i'm absoloutly rubbish in staff lol xD

from what i have seen, most staffers seem to sacrifice speed...

by frontal cone attack method im assuming you are refering to the strafe fan; forward with side to side sweeps. what ive learned about staff is by adding the right movements its a hard thing to break through, try playing around with adding back or forward quickly to the normal side to side.

the most important thing alot of staffers {myself included sometimes} dont seem to pay attention to, is madly fanning the WHOLE fight is asking for a smack with the wrong end of a saber. dont fan the entire fight, fan when you see {or think you see} and opening in the enemies defense, plan out your responses and try to go for a fluid strike.

Main thing you've got to remember is to keep your focus on your opponent and what he/she is doing. Mindless fanning gets you nowhere in a big hurry.

As far as some good tips go, it depends on what type of saber they're using and their fighting style. There's rush fanning, transition fanning, diagonal fanning, etc.
