It's fairly big with teens (gamers mainly) in US... Personally I like Bleach...

PS: They are called anime not cartoons >.>

Edit: to understand alot of them you have to start from the beginning and they usually contain alot of violence...

-FAKEDIT THIS POST WAS REMOVED BECAUSE OF FOUL LANGUAGE AND A LONG EXTENSIVE RANT BASHING ANIME AND ITS FANS-

This was the most polite way I could put my feelings. No seriously. It could not have gotten anymore polite than that.

Cosplay is creepy. Why? Men dress up like women... Most of the time its really fat and ugly men (at least you can tell the men from the women easily).

Its okay I was just curious to be honest.. You do not see much of Anime over here really..

I actually wondered if there was a KR link, never realised it was a big thing like a sub culture.

Not trying to offend anyone, as I say it was an honest question. I saw a post was edited or removed for prophanity.. I cannot understand why a post would be of such a nature like this?

I'm with Darf. I mean I don't have anything against anime or it's fans, it just bores me. Personally I don't understand what it's all about and I know exactly what it is, I mean it just reminds me of cartoons and I stopped watching cartoons at the age of 10.

Some animes are really crappy and boring its true... but others have intricate story lines and many things going on at once with things no parent should let a little kid watch (violence of course!)

I asked a similar question about 3 years ago in my KR days.. Never really understood it..

As Darko says its seems to be some gaming culture, I always thought it was quite a USA culture thing to be honest.. Never thought much of it to be honest then on.. Kind of accepted it as that. I actually think it might be that here in Britain it would not be a popular or "cool" thing to do in your teens and 20s.

There was a guy on my MSN I do not have a clue who he was polish I think. Wondered if he was a KR member who Mel addded him

he kept talking to me sending me videos of

a) Some polish footballer who plays for southhampton :?

b) lots of videos of dragonball something..

It was about 10 minutes of two guys with large spikey hair arguing throwing spells and fireballs and stuff at each other.. To me that was a cartoon... but he obviously loved it so no probs with me!!

This is going to sound patronising but I can honeslty say I might have watched these at primary school, But when id hit the years of senior school/ high school whatever you'd call it. I doubt anyone my age group would have watched it. Well if they had done, they wouldnt admit it as they would have probably been subject to alot of piss taking!! But thats the way things are sometimes in this country.

Whats the difference between "Anime" and cartoon? Is there some difference? Is anime called that because its more adult content??

Although to be honest if I'd wanna watch a violent or higher rated film.. id watch a real one. But thats just me..

mm, their still cartoons. Giving it a different way is just you trying to justify it.

Dragonball was an epic program. When i was 10.
I find it veeeeery strange how people older can enjoy cartoons.

Cartoon: Google: Cartoon

Anime: Google: Anime

Japanese 'Anime' vs. American Cartoons:
David Christiansen wrote: There are quite a few reasons why Anime, or Japanese animation, is simply better then American Cartoons. A prime example would be their plots.

If you really think about it, when was the last time you watched a cartoon that actually had you thinking about what was going to happen next? The truth is, there probably was never such a time.

Although I can't speak for every cartoon out there, the vast majority of American-Made cartoons tend to fall under one of two categories. First come the stereotypical 'Hero Saves the Day' and 'Random Insanity' archetypes. In this type of cartoon the good guy basically chases down the bad guy and defeats him for trying to complete some nefarious plot. A good example of this type would be "Transformers" and "Thunder Cats," from the old days, or even "Ben Ten." These older types of cartoons tend to be very blocky in their animation, and the newer versions of this type such as "Ben Ten" or "Code Lyoko" aren't even trying to be original; instead, they attempt to emulate anime with limited success.

The other type, "random insanity," is becoming more popular today. This archetype cartoon basically consists of whacky characters, taking the mundane activities of every-day life, and turning them in to insane, over-the-top antics that can only be achieved in cartoons. Good examples of these are "Camp Lazlo," "Tom & Jerry," and the "Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy."

The Random Insanity archetype's animation style varies from show to show, but ultimately the characters are intentionally designed to look out-of-proportion in some odd way in order to make the character look goofier. In the end this only serves to enhance the show's "insanity level." Quite often in both types of American cartoons, the background is completely ignored or poorly drawn.

While these two types of cartoons can be entertaining, they're all basically the same song sung to a different tune. Do we really like to be fed the same junk over and over again?

Anime, on the other hand, is a different story. The shows coming out of Japan today are complex in both plot and design. It's hard, in the case of serious anime, to pinpoint specific archetypes. With these, the good guy isn't always the one who wins; in fact, a lot of the time you wonder if they'll even be alive in the next episode.

Sometimes the good guy isn't even the main character in the show! Such is the case with my favorite Anime, "Death Note."

"Death Note" could easily be classified under the genre of "psychological thriller" because in this Anime, characters have the ability to kill any person they wish with a heart attack by simply writing their name in a notebook and picturing their faces.

Imagine what you would do if you had that kind of power. "Light Yagami," the main character and chief villain of the show, is faced with these thoughts when he discovers the notebook lying in the schoolyard one day during school. Over time he discovers its true power and uses it to "purge the world of crime" by killing criminals. Eventually the police agencies of the world realize that the heart attacks criminals are having can't be coincidental. They begin to track down the culprit with the help of the world's greatest detective, the antagonist and hero of the story, simply named "L."

As far as animation itself, Anime looks far more realistic. It can be taken seriously much more easily than its cartoon counterparts. While some Anime do follow the popular American cartoon plot archetypes I have mentioned, Anime is not necessarily for kids. Its stories cover a great deal of age ranges and maturity levels that mainstream cartoons just don't do.

Youtube - Anime vs Cartoon - He got interesting examples.

Cheers, your probably right dragonball does sound like it!!

Thanks for the research too

I think the script is alot about his interopretationm about the technicallities of differences..

Although he does say

"As far as animation itself, Anime looks far more realistic."

I dont quite get that, They all look the same? every single animation charcter looks the same since time began. None look realistic, and they all seem to be over exaggeratted and ugly as hell.

I dunno I just think If I want to watch a

violent
Deep
Twisting plot
Or hell for example puropses even a sexual

Id watch a real film

An animation version seems pointless? an action film well again if it was all serious I cannot take an animated cartoon serious..

I cannot associate the glory of an ugly guy with massive or tiny eyes and a ridiculous hair cut

Thats why things ala "the incredibles" work well its all non serious light watching stuff - although personally not really my sort of thing.

I see where the writers coming from in his thought process.. I just wonder if he is trying to maybe convince himself?

Dragon ball (or its spinoffs Z and GT) was total crap. Meant for kids in my opinion. I don't even consider it a real anime. If you want to see what a real anime is like then watch Bleach. The plot is great and so is the action. Also, like Aki's quote says, you just can't tell if/when someone is going to die. There's alot of suspense in Anime... (another possible reason for the name anime animation see a connection?) Plus any anime is longer than a movie... for some of the more popular ones it could take you months to get to where the anime is at now. (then you have to wait a week for the next episode... it kills me to wait -.-)

Manga is the whole Japanese cartoon thing tbh, its their style of cartoon and because they are all done in such a distinct style to our cartoons it earned its own name: Manga

Anime is Mange, but it contains more adult content to it such a sexual and violent scenes.

I believe thats right, correct me otherwise.

Im with Darfin and Pho here as well though.

I dont like it, never really have, never will.

However I dont mind the drawings, my friend draws a lot of Mange art and it looks really impressive :)

If it's good, yes. If it's bad, no.

Anime > Manga > Comics > Cartoons
