Computer help

Alright so, I was having trouble with my browsers this morning. I was connected to the internet but whenever I clicked on a website it downloaded the URL in a file

I called Microsoft and we determined that it was a 3rd party application that was causing this. However they were going to charge me and muffler and a tire to fix it. I was wondering if any of you people who are extremely tech savvy could help get this thing removed.
Thanks all

Doesn't AVG slow down your browsing speed considerably?

Having AVG myself, I can say that I saw no difference from my browsing speed prior to having AVG and now.

I think there is something deeper though, I'd rather have someone take a look at what I have since I know nothing about this stuff.

I could try. What exactly is it doing? It's downloading the URL instead of taking you to the website? Also was there any program you downloaded prior to this starting? Any new software?

When was the last time you checked your plugins/extensions for the browser? Sometimes when you install free software, they like to sneak in a few toolbars and crap.

Common misconception with anti virus products!
It " Tends " to not be the anti virus program itself slowing you down and infact the combination of still running windows defender & the new anti virus. Once your new protection is in place make sure that it cover Virus's, Malwares and that you have an active firewall on (Windows firewall will do tbh) then you can go to windows defender and turn it off and that will dramatically speed up your computer.
On the browser front my first piece of advice is to reinstall the browser your using (If your using internet explorer it may be simpler to download a new browser like I am using I.E Mozzilla firefox) if that does not work start uninstalling programs you do not recognise or don't use (You can do this through control panel's add and remove programs but be careful not to remove anything that is supposed to be there! I.E windows programs / files) and if all that fails use a restore point to a point before the problem occured.
Sorry I can't help more I'm on my way out the door for work!
Hope it helps
