Yah lol.

Anyways I will be upgrading minors such as heatsink, inbuilt wireless card, card reader, fan controls etc, nothing major for quite some time though lol

Installed office just now whoo hoo now I can do my school work lol

I know I said pictures coming shortly, just havent got round to it lol

I would have thought if the system was built you'd have the correct fans in there no?

You will only need to replace heat sink if its not working adequately (overheating etc) or you plan on over clocking

 #43284  by saunby

Yeah dont get me wrong I have all the right fans in there lol, but Andy told me that the heat sink that comes with processor is stock and it might be better to get another one to get more power out of it or something lol, I added another small fan on the back to suck the air that the massive fan on the front is pulling in lol, might think about adding another of those since they are only cheap.

The stock fan with the core duo is fine.. the processor will run just the same. if heating is an issue just use some paste.

 #43366  by Chantelle

The stock fan intel supply is actually very adequate.. It has absolutley no effect of the speed of your system. If your unsure about the heat check it.. you can always remove the thermal padding and apply artic paste.

Sounds like you have sufficient cooling in there.

Thanks guys, may change it in the future since its inexpensive though :)

As I already said, will be making little upgrades here and there as and when I can afford it :)

Heres a question does your system fully recognise 4GB?

Yes it does. I queried that when we built it.

 #43385  by Melissa

vista 32 wont use 4GB.. it will probably only make use of 2-3..

64bit would use it but 32bit cannot make use of it.

I think when Saunby was looking at the prices, it made sense at the time to get a couple sticks of 2gb rather then get either 3 sticks of 1gb or a 2gb and a 1gb. I think its also more cost effective as well.

Plus it'll be useful in the future if he ever wants to upgrade, because i'm pretty sure Microsofts new operating system will make use of the 4GB, also if Saunby ever wants to boot into Linux, it would make use of it.

Pho~

not critising the purchase, id do the same myself. not messing around with 3 etc..

as you say windows 7 should make use of it either way.

 #43391  by Phoenix

Yeah :)

Well Saunby's got himself a pretty decent comp there, especially for the money he spent on it. He's had it going for over a week now, and has had no problems- which is always a good sign on an own build. I also think that the experience he's gained in building it is also good, it's much better knowing how a computer goes together than being part of the 98% of people on this planet who only know how to use them.

Agreed

Im quite happy now to put things in and out of a computer mostly without help or guidance whereas before I had built mine I wouldnt touch anything in fear of breaking it lol.

Yeah my sister got me to make a few simple ones and it does help.. also gives you some incentive to actually take the bonnet off when things go wrong!

Agreed :)

Not a scalable option. Although irrelevant now anyway as he has built.
.... not a serious remark >.>, dont shoot.....

Hmm, guys I seem to have a problem with my wireless =/

I can connect and it works great, until it loses connection for no reason, almost everything I try to make it work fails apart from restarting my computer which solves it :S
If anyone has any idea please post and let me know lol

What wireless device you using? Somethings like USB fobs can be... inconsistant at times. Not always.
Whats the router?
What wifi software connection are you using?
Whats the distance? are there any metal framing or something interupting it?
Are there any other wifi devices in the building

 #43466  by saunby

Okay I'll start way back.

I used to have my laptop in almost exactly the same place, I dont know what wireless card was in that but I never had problems.

The router is in the room below me so about 8 metres max!
As far as I know there is no metal framing or anything that would block the signal, and as I said most of the time the wireless is perfect, it just cuts out sometimes.
I was using a Belkin USB which worked fine once I had it running, then I installed a Belkin desktop G card into one of the PCI slots.
Similarly the router is a Belkin G.
There are no other wireless (internet) devices in the house.

Im really confused, if I constantly couldnt connect to the internet I would blame something like an interference but it is only occasional, the other thing that confuses me is that I just cant seem to fix it when it goes, I have to restart the computer.

I dont really understand what you mean by wifi software, I just installed the disk that came with the card if thats what you mean, its just a Belkin software disc.

P.s. I wrote this post about 3 or 4 hours before I posted it because I got big internet problems, different one I think it was a loose wire lol.

Anyways help is appreciated, thanks Chan :)

Ugh dont know if its the same stuff but we had belkin wireless cards and stuff at work

awfully unrelaible stuff, like yours actually 90%+ signal excellent.... bang gone..

We got netgears in the end.

 #43473  by saunby

Possibly similar then, its just so damnannoying because I get a really really good connection and then I dont have any connection, if I can get this sorted I wont be bothered by it at all. Also Ive always used the Belkin router and the usb never had any problems lol, wonder if I use both it will help :P

 #43482  by Melissa

Do you get the same results on the USB and the PCI card?

Our stores guy used a belkin wireless G card Pci card... kept just going off!!!

However like you say its perfect then goes off... sometime4s someone walking past did it

even if for testing sake try your usb.. see if the problem happens on that

Do you use a belkin thing to connect wirelessly

id use teh windows one if you can.

 #43485  by Phoenix

I said to Matt about Belkin being unrealiable, and the signal dropping out. From working in a computer shop i'm always hearing people saying about the Belkin products just dropping out. But then again the for the same thing the Netgear product is £10 more. I guess you get what you pay for.

 #43487  by Chantelle

Is saunby = Matt?

Okay well I also am going to join the bandwagon of Belkin wireless non likers.

Intersting Belkin used to make decent stuff, dont mind their cables etc

But wireless stuff arent good from them.

Netgear, Linksys (not sure if you still get them by that brand name) or Cisco..

But if your USB worked okay why not try that?

 #43492  by saunby

Saunby is indeed Matt :P

I used the USB for like a few days if not a week with no problems and then the card was okay for a while.

I may just wait it out, someone is coming over on Tuesday to look at mums comp anyway, I'll ask her about it :)
